Tech Track: Upcoming PS4 Games
The PlayStation 4 is still the best-selling video games console worldwide and it recently passed the 50 million unit mark. This means the console is likely to exceed predictions for sales and represents an 8.3% rise in overall sales. This is excellent news for Sony because Xbox has finally started to catch up to their rivals in the console wars. In fact, Microsoft ended the second half of 2016 with the most impressive sales numbers for that period – a big change from the previous console generation, when the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 by almost 4 to 1.
However, the tide might be about to turn back in PlayStation’s favour. Sony has been far more open about their progress on the PlayStation 5, while Microsoft’s ‘Project Scorpio’ is still hushed up – perhaps indicating that the former machine will be ready much sooner. Added to this, Sony has secured some incredible exclusive content for fans of the PS4 console, and these are sure to draw in new buyers as well as keep the current players happy.
PS4 Games To Get Excited For In 2017
Exclusive content is an important weapon for console manufacturers. It draws in fans of the game series and keeps them loyal to a particular brand. It also benefits the developers, who can avoid cross-console compatibility issues and optimise their game for a particular set-up. It looks like PlayStation are winning the battle of exclusive content so far this year, with over thirty PS-only titles already announced, and much more expected at E3.
Some of the top titles coming later this year include:
- The Last of Us Part II
- Nex Machina
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Persona 5
- Gravity Rush II
There are also some new DLC packs on the way. The most notable is a special Uncharted spin-off, following the stories of Nadine and Chloe in a sequel-style addition to the fourth instalment. Watch out for the biggest jewel in the PS4 crown – the beloved adventure game Final Fantasy VII is getting a much-needed remastering and re-release in 2017, which is sure to delight new and old fans alike.
Other Releases Which Are PS4 Compatible
As well as those exclusive titles, PlayStation will support a large number of the year’s highest rated games and most keenly awaited content. One of the games to watch this year will be the South Park sequel The Fractured But Whole, an 18+ comic RPG based on the TV series. The new game follows on from the hugely popular The Stick Of Truth, which has sold 5 million copies to date. For anyone who missed the first instalment, it will also be released for the PS4 console this year.
The other big gaming news for the PlayStation 4 console is the rapid development of content for its virtual reality headset. Despite a slow start on appearing in the market, PlayStation VR headsets are starting to come down in price and consumers are picking up interest. As more titles are released which are compatible with these headsets, their popularity is sure to rise.
Star Wars Battlefront has a built-in VR experience for players, which is based on the Rogue One movie, while Until Dawn is a terrifying immersive horror experience. However, the most important VR experience you can have on a PlayStation 4 right now is Batman Arkham VR. This is about as close as you can get to actually being Batman and Rocksteady deserve plenty of credit for this superb creation.
